Join the Refugee 613 Board of Directors!
Are you looking for an opportunity to donate some of your time and talent to a dynamic young organization making a tangible difference in our community?
Some of the amazing people who make up our current Board are retiring after helping to steer the organization through our recent transition to operating as an independent registered charity. We’re seeking new voices to help shape the future of Refugee 613 as we embark on a new strategic planning process – a collaborative effort to chart how we can best meet newcomers' needs in an increasingly complex service and political environment.
It’s an exciting time in our history. Refugee 613’s impact — local and national — is growing. As a Board member, you’d be directly engaged in helping shape our future.
About Refugee 613's Board of Directors
Ours is a working Board in transition to a governance Board. That means Board members provide some practical support in addition to their guidance and strategic insights.
-
Board members attend our (efficient and effective!) monthly Board meetings by Zoom.
-
They commit to contributing a few hours a month to one of our Board committees (Governance & Risk, Finance or HR), where they work alongside staff to develop organizational policies and processes.
-
Board members will also be asked to represent the organization from time to time and to promote our work and our values in their networks.
-
The time commitment for a full Board member is about five to eight hours a month, often less.
How to Apply
We’re currently seeking Board members with skills in the following areas:
-
Human Resources
-
Law
-
Finance
-
Immigration and refugee policy and practice
-
Allied sectors, such as health, housing and social services
Join us and feel the Refugee 613 difference! You’ll be working with caring, warm and positive Board volunteers and staff, most of whom are immigrants themselves. We believe in getting things done while having a good time together, as we build a better Ottawa and stronger Canada.
If any of these roles appeal to you, please send your application to careers@refugee613.ca by June 5, 2026. Your submission should include a letter of interest identifying why you are a great fit for our Board, which committee you feel best suited to support and a resumé outlining your qualifications.
Refugee 613 is fully committed to equity and wants to ensure diversity of national origin, race, religion, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation and all other characteristics that make us unique and different. We welcome all applications, and in particular we encourage anyone with lived experience as a newcomer to Canada, as well as people from racialized or marginalized communities.
Nominations will be reviewed by a selection committee, with the position starting in September, 2026.
If you have questions about this opportunity or about Refugee 613, please email us at careers@refugee613.ca, and we’d be happy to connect you with our Executive Director or a current Board of Directors member for a conversation.
If this opportunity isn’t for you but you know someone who might be interested, please help us spread the word by sharing it with them and posting it on your social channels!
